Law Enforcement Vehicles Here V.s There

Law Enforcement vehicles range in all shapes, sizes and uses. You have the one seater parking enforcement vehicles of the NYPD, to the Lamborghini Gallardo used by Italian law enforcement (Wright, Ian). Each of these vehicles serves a special purpose, the parking enforcement vehicles are small, compact, easy to maneuver so they can be out of the road or pull into narrow streets without holding up traffic. While the Lamborghini is to transfer internal organs to hospital quickly, or transport medical supplies or blood to crash sites (Wright, Ian). My point is that all law enforcement vehicles are rooted in some form of utility and that utility can vary tremendously.

For example having a hyper-car police cruiser in Hopkinton would be an absolute waste of money because there is no need for it here. we don't have a problem with hyper-cars on our roads or have the money to pay for one with no real repercussions. While a dodge charger for example is quick enough to catch up to the average sports car, has four seats, so there is room for detainment behind front row of seats, the engine and the vehicle itself have been proven to be reliable. Another benefit for a charger is an oil change only costs a few hundred dollars versus a couple thousand for a hyper/supercar.

Another vehicle being commonly used by local law enforcement is the Ford Interceptor which is based on the ford explorer platform. this vehicle has been widely preferred by law enforcement for its comfortability and spaciousness over cars like  Ford Crown Victoria's. Of course not everyone has set budget, like Qatar's Porsche Panamera that comes with a price tag of around $175,000 dollars. This is however partly because Qatar is a large shareholder of Porsche, and therefore most of their police fleet is made up of Porsche vehicles. Qatar's Panamera has a 0-60mph time of about 4.1 seconds, and a top speed of 197mph (Maraba Qatar). Compare that to the Ford Police Interceptor Utility's 0-60mph time of 5.77 seconds and it has a top speed of 150mph (Product Expert). Now lets compare why departments buy each car, Qatar bought their Panamera to catch fast cars, strengthen their bond with Porsche, and as a symbol to showoff wealth, while departments buy Interceptors for cargo space, the features it brings to the table, it's capability and its relative cheapness of around $40,000 dollars.

Depending on where you go police vehicles can change drastically, as I have proven and sometimes lose their utility aspect and become showpieces or symbols of wealth rather than law enforcement vehicles. I'm not saying you should speed or run from the law enforcement but if you were to think that'd be a fun time I absolutely do not recommend doing that in the middle east because they just wait for someone to be stupid enough to try it.

  1. An interesting approach to the topic. But what's a hyper/super car? Does Hopkinton/NH police generally use Chargers?

Don't forget alphabetical order for citations.

    1. A hyper/supercar is a top of the line preformance and speed orinented vehichle, for example only around 1% of all cars are considered hyper cars, a good average example would be your Lamborghini Aventadors, or Ferrari's La'Ferrari both extremly quick, expensive and rare vehicles.

  2. Very interesting blog Brett, and what are the specifications of the Dodge Chargers, compared to the Ford Intercepter and compared to a Hypercar? Very good blog overall.
